Old Sana’a, Yemen’s capital, is reputed to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and one of the oldest. Situated at the foot of Mount Nuqum, 2200 metres high, old Sana’a is surrounded by a massive wall, and the best way to feel the full impact of the old city is to walk through the Bab al-Yaman gate and explore its markets, minarets, or climb the tower houses, and catch the breathtaking view. The National Museum provides a fascinating trip back to pre-Islamic times. A visit to South Yemen and the old port city of Aden is well worth the time, and offers a glimpse at the scope of the country’s agricultural side, which is gradually overtaking its oil industry in importance.
